Two digits swap places between one cell and the next. Not a typo you can blame on speed, just a clean transposition, the kind you catch too late. It happens with letters too, so you assume it is dyslexia doing what dyslexia does.
Then someone mentions dyscalculia, and the doubt creeps in. Maybe the numbers thing is separate. Maybe you've been mislabeling it for years.
The mix-up: "dyslexic and bad with numbers" isn't automatically dyscalculia
Workplaces, and plenty of dyslexic adults, treat maths trouble as part of the same package as dyslexia. Struggle with spelling, struggle with sums, same root cause. That assumption is usually wrong.
Dyscalculia is a separate difficulty on its own. It affects how the brain reads number size: comparing amounts, putting them in order, guessing a rough answer, and grasping place value (SASC definition of a Specific Learning Difficulty in Mathematics, 2025).
Most dyslexic adults who struggle with numbers don't have that difficulty. Their number sense works fine. What breaks down is holding several digits in mind while copying, checking, or working out a sum under pressure.
So what for you: before you ask for an adjustment, work out which failure mode is yours. The fix for a memory slip isn't the fix for a true number-sense difficulty.
The real numbers: 60% versus 6%
Share of dyslexic adults who report some difficulty with maths, against the share of people who actually have dyscalculia (British Dyslexia Association, accessed August 2026).
The British Dyslexia Association puts it plainly: 60% of people with dyslexia will have difficulties with maths. That's the figure most people mix up with dyscalculia itself.
But dyscalculia is rarer. The BDA says 25% of people have some kind of maths difficulty, but only about 6% have dyscalculia. The 60% figure sits inside a much wider group than the 6% figure covers.
Put those two numbers side by side and the gap is hard to miss. Ten times more dyslexic adults report maths trouble than the share of people who have dyscalculia. Most of that gap is not dyscalculia at all.
You'll sometimes see the overlap quoted as "roughly 1 in 4 dyslexic adults also have dyscalculia." That figure is a mix-up. It takes the BDA's 25% maths-difficulty rate for the whole population and wrongly applies it to dyslexic adults alone.
So what for you: if you struggle with numbers and you're dyslexic, the odds say it's a knock-on effect of dyslexia first, and dyscalculia second. Don't assume the rarer answer without checking.
Why dyscalculia works differently
The 2025 SASC definition draws a clear line. Dyscalculia's main feature is trouble with number size itself: knowing seven is bigger than four without counting, sensing place value, and guessing a rough answer before you work one out.
Dyslexia-linked maths trouble runs through different channels. Reading can scramble how a word problem looks on the page. Memory can drop a carried digit halfway through a sum.
Eye and page tracking can also misalign columns in written sums. Both patterns can lead to the same visible mistake, a wrong total on a spreadsheet. But the cause, and the fix that actually works, aren't the same.
The SASC definition also confirms the two often co-occur, along with ADHD and other processing differences. Co-occurring isn't the same as identical.
Think of two colleagues who both get the same budget total wrong. One re-reads the figure, spots the error at once, and fixes it once it's pointed out; their number sense was fine, the memory step failed.
The other truly can't say, without counting on fingers or a calculator, whether 340 is bigger than 430. Same visible error, two different causes, two different fixes.
So what for you: describe the actual mistake, not just the subject. "I lose track of carried numbers" points to a different fix than "I can't tell which of two prices is higher."
A quick self-check, not a diagnosis
None of this replaces a formal assessment. But noticing which pattern fits you helps you ask for the right thing today, not in six months.
- Digits swap or vanish when you copy them, but you spot the error fast once you slow down and check again. That points to dyslexia-linked memory, not dyscalculia.
- You lose your place partway through a sum with several steps and have to start over, even though each step is easy on its own. Also a memory and ordering pattern.
- Working out which of two numbers is bigger feels truly uncertain, not just slow, even with both written down in front of you. That leans toward dyscalculia.
- Place value trips you up (mixing up 4,000 and 40,000, for example) even with a calculator doing the sum for you. Also a dyscalculia-linked pattern.
So what for you: if the first two feel familiar and the last two don't, a memory-and-checking fix will likely solve most of your problem. If all four ring true, raise it at a formal assessment.
What this looks like at your desk
A dyslexia-linked pattern: you swap digits copying a total between systems, lose your place halfway through a sum, or misread a number under pressure in a meeting. Given time and a calculator, you get it right.
A dyscalculia-linked pattern looks different. Working out whether a budget is roughly on track feels truly hard, not just slow. Place value trips you up even with a calculator in hand, and telling two amounts apart takes real, deliberate effort.

So what for you: match the fix to the mistake. A checking step fixes swapped digits; it won't fix a true struggle with number sense.
Getting the label right, without waiting for one
You don't need a diagnosis to ask for help. Under the Equality Act 2010, your employer's duty starts once they know, or ought reasonably to know, about the difficulty, not once you hand over a report.

In the UK, a workplace needs assessment paid for by Access to Work can screen for dyscalculia in the same visit as dyslexia, rather than as a separate trip. In the US, some state Vocational Rehabilitation programs and private accommodation consultants offer maths-specific testing, though funding routes are less standard than in the UK.
An assessment gives you paperwork an employer finds harder to argue with. It isn't the only route to getting help, but it's the one that settles the question for good.
So what for you: ask for the fix that matches the mistake you're actually making this week. Book an assessment alongside it only if the mismatch keeps happening after that.
